VXLAN Explained (Detailed)

What is VXLAN?

VXLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN) is an overlay networking technology that enables Layer 2 networks to be extended over Layer 3 infrastructure. It encapsulates Ethernet frames within UDP packets, allowing cloud providers to build highly scalable and isolated virtual networks across distributed environments.

How VXLAN Works (Simplified)

  • Each tenant network is assigned a unique VXLAN Network Identifier (VNI)
  • Traffic is encapsulated and transported over IP networks
  • Decapsulation happens at the destination hypervisor
  • Enables seamless communication across zones and clusters
